- Timing: All day 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (UTC +8)

- Theme: Energy Data and
Decarbonisation
Energy Data and Decarbonisation
The energy transition involves reducing
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to ‘net zero.’ This process, also known as decarbonisation, aims to
balance remaining emissions with removals from the atmosphere.
Decarbonisation as applied to industries and
economies was not even a word a few years ago, then it started appearing in Corporate Social Responsibility
statements, and today it has become a top priority, with companies in the energy sector under particular
scrutiny from direct stakeholders as well as government and society.
Current expectations are for energy companies
to have a detailed understanding of every aspect of their carbon emissions in order to operate in increasingly
stringent and complex regulatory environments. This can only be achieved through diligent collection, management
and analysis of consistent and reliable data across a wide range of operational disciplines from exploration,
production and refining, to carbon capture, carbon sequestration and decommissioning. In fact, data-driven
approaches have never been so critical as they are today in helping to accelerate the energy transition through
the application of new technologies with the aim of delivering a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
This relatively new aspect of the energy
industry brings challenges as well as opportunities for the organisations and their employees, contractors and
suppliers, in fact, all stakeholders. As with all “best practice” data management, the content,
context, meaning and derivation of data must be transparent and trusted at all levels of an organisation from
managers in the corporate boardroom through to staff using advanced technical systems in remote field
locations.
Entirely new activities are emerging. New
or historically neglected data sets are becoming critical, and they must be verifiable. Data is seen as
the primary resource to inform business decisions; now it is becoming an essential element of the social license
and permit-to-operate. With a focus on data, PPDM’s Banff Protocol for Emissions Reporting is an example
of a new initiative that aims to deliver optimized emissions reporting and clarity for greater
efficiency.
At this year’s workshop, we shall hear
from a range of industry stakeholders about these new activities, requirements, opportunities and lessons
already learned. This could involve work with valuable legacy petroleum data sets right through to new and
emerging energy data types. Your opinions, concerns and experience matter and we will all benefit from hearing
about each other’s.
Please plan to participate in
this event, and consider submitting an abstract to contribute. Simply contact Peter (pgoyne1@optusnet.com.au) or
Antonie (antonie.dutoit@antsgeoconsulting.com.au) from the Australian PPDM Team to discuss it.
