OSDU Data Platform: The Promise and the Transition(s)
The Open Group Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDUTM) Forum was established in order to deliver an Open Source, standards-based, technology-agnostic data platform for the energy industry. The technology is now undergoing several transitions, from a version to a milestone release schedule, from a subsurface to a new energy footprint, and in some operating companies from “watching brief” to proof of concept or pilot implementation status. Some in the industry see this as an opportunity to move from traditional data management and delivery to data enrichment and curation. Of particular interest to many operators will be the Open Footprint forum, which will consolidate data standards for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions measuring, monitoring and compliance.
The OSDU Data Platform is potentially positioned to transform the way that companies use emerging technology, and shift the focus from data-flows to workflows, allowing user access to industry standard Application Programming Interface (API) tools that ‘plug and play’ into value streams to access best in class and fit-for-purpose services. The platform is evolving with funding and resources from at least 26 operators and close to 200 software, service and technology providers, and future release milestones will be key to showing if OSDU can deliver on its promise.
This presentation will draw on Katalyst’s involvement with the OSDU Forum and members, giving one viewpoint on the current state, opportunities, and challenges of the platform.
The PPDM Association's What is a Facility Group will also provide an update.
