Manifesto
‘To solve the energy crisis will require the greatest energy of all;
human creativity.’ – Daniel Yergin
Within the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of the global energy sector, the prevailing dialogue
revolves around the exigency of decarbonization; a focal point now deemed imperative by industry on a
global scale. Recent findings highlight this conviction, illustrating that a significant majority of
energy leaders aspire to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030; a corporate transfiguration underscoring the
meticulous planning, accelerated digital innovation, and substantial resource allocation required to
achieve this ambitious goal.
The collective pursuit of carbon neutrality transcends regulatory compliance, acknowledging the pivotal
role that sustainability plays in achieving success in the energy sector, with a discernible
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy now considered the new baseline for attracting
talent across the organizational spectrum.
As transparency and reliability in sustainability performance data gain ascendancy, stakeholders,
investors, and potential collaborators worldwide can meticulously scrutinize a company's adherence to
sustainability goals. The consequences of inadequate performance extend beyond business viability, with
demonstrable progress serving as a gateway to sustained legitimacy within the global energy ecosystem.
Discussions on decarbonization routinely orbit formative technologies facilitating the transition to
carbon-neutral operations. Executives globally attribute a vital role to digital innovation, signaling
substantial investments in enhancing IT functionality. However, technological prowess, though pivotal,
is not the exclusive catalyst for success.
The term ‘culture’ emerges as a comprehensive paradigm, encompassing elements frequently
overlooked in the tech-centric discourse on decarbonization. Culture becomes the essential counterparty
to data in effecting transformative change within an energy enterprise, transcending incremental changes
and immaterial technological advances. To realize ESG objectives, business leaders must cultivate a
culture of creativity and sustainability across every echelon, from the boardroom to the operational
frontlines.
Strategies for this cultural transformation include establishing success criteria and providing
incentives such as bonuses to galvanize employees toward organizational goals. Leveraging data to its
full potential becomes imperative, with the data itself requiring an ‘investment-grade’
status - defined by accuracy, timeliness, completeness, relevance, and auditability. Trustworthiness and
transparent utilization of ESG data become non-negotiable in the contemporary energy landscape. Despite
the rhetoric, numerous energy enterprises grapple with inefficient and inconsistent data flows, often
resulting from the use of manual reporting tools, immature data governance, and fragmented operational
processes. Overcoming these barriers carries profound implications, reaching beyond external optics and
penetrating the core of the sustainability culture necessary to materially advance the global energy
sector.
If data integrity is assured, ESG-related performance can be precisely measured, empowering executives to
align incentive structures with performance data and expediting both individual and company-wide
momentum toward sustainability objectives. Generating quality ESG data is pivotal in effecting a
cultural shift, and steering these dual efforts in the right direction necessitates unifying the energy
enterprise through digital transformation.
As energy companies worldwide navigate escalating ESG disclosure demands amidst climate change and
regulatory pressures, cultivating a robust and enduring sustainability culture demands concerted effort
and resources. The evolution to a human-centric data fabric seems essential to the success of this
intricate process, ensuring transparency and driving meaningful results that resonate with the
enterprising leaders shaping the future of the global energy landscape.
In the rapidly developing fervor for progressive change, the endeavor to cultivate a data-driven culture
of sustainability stands as an unequivocal investment -conferring value, managing risk, and ultimately
fortifying the future of both the energy enterprise and the environment alike.

About the Houston Convention
The energy landscape is forever changed. Companies have pivoted to broad energy portfolios and adopted
bold plans to achieve or exceed sustainability goals set by governments, international agencies and
their own corporate policies. Regulatory expectations for consultation, transparency and compliance
continue to escalate.
Achieving success in this demanding
landscape will depend on swift but meticulous planning, thoughtful innovation and substantial resource
allocation. The consequence of inadequate performance extends beyond business viability into the
sustained legitimacy of the global energy industry.
Leveraging data to its full potential has become imperative. Investors and shareholders base their
decisions on data that exposes financial and ESG (Environment, social and governance) performance rather
than intentions or commitments. Energy executives require a foundation of robust framework of
results-based, investment grade data.
Trustworthy, transparent, auditable and integrated data are now non-negotiable. Many companies continue
to struggle with data. Immature data governance, untrusted or inaccessible data, diverse or conflicting
requirements, technology lock-in, and fragmented processes hinders the flow of data to those who need it
and hampers decision making.
Investment decisions must be made with confidence. When data quality and integrity is assured, ESG and
economic performance can be precisely measured, internally and globally. Tools for data analysis,
reporting and exchange can be reliably adopted as rapid technology advances offer new opportunities to
help experts and novices make appropriate business decisions.
In the fervor for progressive change, the need to cultivate a sustainable, data-driven culture stands as
an unequivocal investment; conferring value, managing risk, and ultimately fortifying the future of both
the energy enterprise and the environment alike.
Join us at the Norris Center in downtown Houston on June 11th and 12th, 2024 as we examine the role of
data in empowering the global energy transition.

TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS
Monday, June 10th 2024
Topic 1: What is Seismic for Data Professionals (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
Seismic data is one of earth sciences' most malleable data types. From planning through acquisition,
processing, interpretation and brokerage, seismic data is organized, reorganized, divided, combined,
renamed, recalculated, reprocessed, reinterpreted and distributed countless times. The result is often
chaotic data systems that are rife with duplication, ambiguity and confusion.
In this workshop, people who understand seismic data management will discuss PPDM’s plans related
to the development of standardized best practices and recommendations for seismic data. This task
requires a good understanding of seismic data management. We want to hear from data-driven
professionals, who can contribute to the creation of best practices for making the industry more
efficient through access to consistent, trusted seismic data. Note that the work done in this project
will be entirely technology neutral.

Topic 2: The Banff Protocol for Emissions Reporting (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM)
This workshop will review the plan laid out in the project charter, gather information from participants
and discuss approaches for development. Note that the work done in this project will be entirely
technology neutral. We welcome those involved in preparing, using or understanding emissions reporting
to partners, regulators, financial institutions and other stakeholders.
The content, context, meaning and derivation of data must be transparent and trusted at all levels, from
corporate head office to advanced technical systems. In a world of diverse regulatory, industry and
social expectations this is almost impossible to achieve, but the need is clear: To become more
emissions efficient, we must become more data efficient!

TRAINING
John Jacobs will teach PPDM pre-convention training classes on June 10th at the Norris Conference Center,
Houston City Center.
Monday June 10th; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
The pre-convention training is meant for students focused on geosciences, engineering, and information
technology or those new to the petroleum industry; these courses are not just beneficial; they're a
must. They provide a solid foundation and practical insights that can kickstart your career in the
industry. The morning session will arm you with foundational knowledge related to industry standards and
best practices that will accelerate your work effectiveness. The afternoon session is all about the
business life cycle of the well and the five phases associated with the asset life cycle. We will also
introduce you to key data points along the way. Let's take the mystery out of the business phases of
this critical asset.
Class 1: PDM-002 and PDM-003 What is a Well and Well Status and Classification (8:00 AM –
12:00
PM)
Are you tired of ambiguity? WIAW helps you understand why and how the language used to
describe various components of a well in data systems has diverged over time, making even simple
questions (such as “Find all the wells that we have an interest in”) difficult or impossible
to answer.
We’ll help you understand how the WIAW serves as a clearly defined “Rosetta Stone”
helping you integrate data sources, create a cohesive story about each well, and answer critical
business questions. We will review the ground-breaking work done by the collaborative PPDM Association
project "What is a Well" (WIAW), the WIAW interactive tool, baseline definitions, representative
diagrams, and baseline comparisons.
Part two of the morning session covers Well Status and Classification systems in the
industry. Join this session to explore challenges associated with the resulting deluge of industry
“status” vocabularies. We’ll lay out a method for reconciling these systems into a
clearly laid out faceted taxonomy using the acclaimed Well Status and Classification taxonomy.
We’ll show examples of how industry diversity in this vocabulary has resulted in plot symbol sets
that are confusing and often contradictory; an alternative approach is explored.
Class 2: PDM-040: Business Life Cycle of the Well Level 1.1:Introduction (1:00 PM - 5:00
PM)
This course provides a general overview of the business life cycle of the well within the petroleum asset
life cycle. You’ll navigate through all phases of the cycle including planning, drilling,
completing, producing, and disposing. This practical course looks at business processes and key data
points, using an operating company as the basis.
