Target Audience:
Executives and managers, project team members or new data managers who will be working with spatial or location information in the oil and gas industry. PDM-020 provides a high-level overview of the types of spatial information that are commonly used, and the challenges that today’s spatial systems face. It covers a small set of basic rules that spatial data should follow. Students will be prepared to participate in five additional spatial classes covering: Coordinate Reference Systems, Areas, Spatial Descriptions and Land Rights, Wells and Seismic.

Course Description:
This session introduces the prevalence of spatial location information in the oil and gas industry, identifies some key challenges users are likely to face, reviews examples of foundational data problems encountered, and lays out some basic principles for spatial data management.

  • Recognize and discuss the importance of spatial data to the oil and gas industry
  • Review and discuss examples of spatial data complexities for industry data
  • Understand and discuss some typical challenges related to spatial data
  • Recognize and discuss data quality for spatial data
  • Review and discuss how local and regulatory environments can impact spatial data
  • Describe some key rules about spatial data and how they impact data quality

Evaluation Method(s) / Metrics:
Final Exam. Pass grade 70% or higher.

Completion Award:
PPDM Certificate of Completion.
